Ruth Rood runs the coaching practice at Green Sea.

Hello, I’m Ruth Rood and I’m a life coach.

In 2005, after a career break taken to bring up my children, I began training with the Coaches Training Institute to become a Life Coach, as I was eager to help people, especially women, re-focus and get their life back on track when things seemed to be going awry. At the end of the training, I was awarded my Coaching Certificate (ICF Accredited Coaching Training Programme) in Co-Active Coaching. In Co-Active Coaching, the Client and Life Coach work together in partnership, but always on the Client’s terms.

I live with my husband, son and three gorgeous cats. For fun and to keep fit, I kick-box and am a 4th Dan Black Belt.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Life Coaching and Counselling?
Counselling looks at your past, at what has gone before to get you to the point you are at now, and then aims to get you moving forward by addressing your past life. Life Coaching, on the other hand, isn’t interested in your history – as far as your Life Coach is concerned, your life begins from where you are now, and it is their job to get you moving to where you want to be.
Will you tell me what to do?
No. The answers and solutions to all your questions and problems are inside you. I help you access them.
If I have a Life Coach, does it mean there’s something wrong with me?
Absolutely not! If you feel you need Life Coaching, it actually means you’re right on the ball, recognising the fact that you’re struggling a little and need help. A Life Coach is a non-judgemental person you can talk to in complete confidentiality. They are there to hold your hand when you get scared, push you on when all your inhibitions tell you to hold back, and champion you to reach your goals.
How long will I need your Life Coaching sessions for?
As a general rule, I recommend four 50 minute, weekly Life Coaching sessions, which is then reviewed once the month is up. By this stage, it is usual for a Client to have found all the answers they were looking for and is off and running.
Do the sessions have to be face to face?
No, our sessions can be performed in any manner that suits you best. My Life Coaching sessions can be managed face to face, over the phone or by Skype video calls.
What kinds of people have Life Coaching?
Any and all kinds of people may feel the need to have Life Coaching sessions. These can be people who have a high-pressured job and are feeling stressed and muddle-headed; people who find themselves being pulled in all directions by their families and friends; or simply people who think they are not functioning to their full potential and need a nudge in the right direction. People choose Life Coaching when they want to make a change in their life, but are not quite sure where or how to start. I help them access their solutions.
What are the benefits of Life Coaching?
Life Coaching brings clarity and focus. I’ll give you a simple example. During or after a session, the sentence I most often hear from my Clients is ‘Why didn’t I think of that before!’ Sometimes the answers are so obvious, we miss them.
What does a person have to do when they have a Life Coaching session?
When a person has a Life Coaching session, all they have to do is be honest with themselves, be open to new ideas, and be willing to make the changes that they promise to ensure they achieve their objectives.

Case Study One


Client A came to see me in a state of exhaustion. Despite having a full-time job and a young family, she was the Go-To girl for her extended family and was being pulled in several different directions at once.

We looked at the effect this was having on her life and I asked her to draw me two pictures. The first was her life as it was and the second was her life as she wanted it to be. I asked Client A how she thought she could get from the first picture to the second. At first, she wasn’t sure, but then the ideas flowed thick and fast, and she decided to implement them that very day.

Within a couple of months, Client A had achieved her objective and was living the life she had pictured. She was much happier, sleeping better and had lots more energy.

Case Study Two


Client B had been in business for several years, only reacting to events, never pre-empting them. She had never set any business goals for herself and was consequently getting rather bored with her work. She wanted to take charge of her business and bring the excitement she had first felt when she began her company back.

Together, we identified a large business goal. Large goals can be a bit daunting, so we wrote it down on a piece of paper and put a circle round it. Many things had to be put in place before the goal could even be tackled, so we drew lines from the circle to represent each of those tasks. Client B’s Spidergram was taking shape before her eyes and she started to get excited about her business again.

At the end of the first Life Coaching session, Client B chose just a few of these things to tackle. Then the next week, she chose a few more, and so on. All during our time together, Client B was working towards the large goal she had set for herself at the start, and which had at that time, seem unattainable. With my help, she achieved that goal, found a new enthusiasm for her business, and was set for success.
